Guide details
Before you begin
A dated first-party check of Xbox ecosystem support, the Steam boundary, and the difference between the intended three-player design and the host's six-player option.
This note owns the confirmed platform wording and lobby-size distinction checked on August 29, 2026. It does not invent a Steam-to-Xbox promise, a rejoin procedure, or a PS5 release claim that the first-party sources reviewed here do not establish.

Before you set out
Prerequisites#
- Confirm which storefront ecosystem every player uses before promising a mixed-platform session.
- Have the host and all joining players install the same current build before comparing lobby behavior.
- Use a three-player-or-smaller group when you want the balance the developer designed and marketed.

Decision point
Choose the lobby expectation before inviting anyone#
Match the group you actually have to the strongest claim the current first-party pages support.
- One to three players
- Choose when: Everyone wants the intended first-playthrough balance.
- Outcome: Use the normal design target described by the developer and first-party storefront copy.
- Four to six players
- Choose when: The host knowingly chooses the larger maximum added by the Day 1 patch.
- Outcome: The lobby setting is available, but the developer warns that the game may become too chaotic above three.
- Steam and Xbox mixed group
- Choose when: Friends own the game in different storefront ecosystems.
- Outcome: Do not promise compatibility: the reviewed first-party pages do not confirm Steam-to-Xbox matchmaking.
Fault ledger
Why different pages show different player counts#
- The store description says up to three players
- That is the designed and marketed maximum. It remains the recommended group size even after the lobby option changed.
- The host sees a six-player maximum
- That option comes from the official Day 1 patch. It changes the selectable lobby cap, not the developer's intended balance.
- A page claims universal crossplay
- Check the platform wording. Xbox advertises cross-platform co-op in its ecosystem; the first-party sources reviewed here do not establish Steam-to-Xbox play.
August 29, 2026 verification note#
The Day 1 patch says a host can select a maximum player count of six while the game remains designed and marketed for a maximum of three. The Xbox listing supplies the Xbox cross-platform and Play Anywhere claims. The Steam-to-Xbox boundary remains deliberately unclaimed until a first-party source confirms it.
Field questions
Shift At Midnight player and platform questions#
- Is Shift At Midnight a four-player game?
- Four people can fit inside the selectable six-player maximum, but four is not the official design target. The game is designed around a maximum of three.
- Can Steam and Xbox players join each other?
- The first-party pages checked on August 29, 2026 do not confirm that pairing. Xbox ecosystem cross-platform co-op is listed; Steam-to-Xbox matchmaking is not claimed here.
- Is a six-player lobby recommended for a first run?
- No. The developer explicitly warns that more than three players is outside the designed experience and is not recommended for a first playthrough.
